Synopsis of "Yabure-gasa Choan"
Murai Choan is a clinic doctor in Edo (Tokyo city). He gave his house to his young sister Osoyo. Then he went to Edo.
There was no way for Osoyo and her husband Chobei have to abandon their farmland due to Osoyo's serious illness and also heavy duty taxes. Finally they decided to sell their daughter Oume to Yoshiwara* .
On Chobei's way home from Yoshiwara, Choan killed him and robbed money. Intentionally Choan left paper umbrella **. At the place he killed victim as an evidence of the crime. This umbrella is belong to a Ronin *** Michijyuro Fujikake. He forgot it at the time when he visited Choan's clinic. Choan laid the guilt on Michijyuro. Due to this Choan's cunning idea, Michijyuro could not certify his non-guilty, finally he died in prison.
Osoyo believes that her daughter Oume is now on a job as maid. She eagerly asked Choan to see Oume. Choan let makes Sanji, his follow, to kill Osoyo.
By his sly trick, Choan could not control himself to make crime for money.
*Yoshiwara: the authorized licensed prostitution house
**humble paper umbrella: In Japanese "yabure-gasa". "Yabure-gasa Choan" is the title of this performance.
***Ronin: Job-and lordless Samurai during a feudal period.
Profile of Performer
Kawatake, Mokuami (1816 Edo, Tokyo -1893)
Dramatist of Kabuki play during Edo- and Meiji period. He is famous as "Japanese Shakespeare".
In Edo period, Mokuami sketches the society and human in Edo city wrote many dramas of heroic thieves. During Meiji period, he wrote the cultures of so-called "cultural epoch making" - Japanese westernization - .
Mokuami satisfies his drama "Murai Choan". However it is seldom performed because of its difficulty of play. The last Performance was in 1979 (National theater). It will be valuable opportunity.
Yamamoto, Kiyokazu (1939 Tokyo - ) Dramatist/ Director
Graduated Tokyo Univ. Artistic Dramatist of Black Tent Theatre, Stage director, writes Scripts for TVs and radios.
First work with Youkiza: "The Restaurant of Many Orders" by Kenji Miyazawa (premiere; 2006) . It becomes one of our hits.
Kushida, Kazuyoshi Actor, Director, Theatrical designer
Director and Artistic director of Matsumoto Performing Arts Centre(2003-).
1966: started a theater group "Jiyu-Gekijyo" and worked as director and dramatist.
1985-96: 1st Artistic director of Bunkamura theatre Cocoon (Shibuya). "Cocoon-Kabuki", which he created with Kabuki-actor Nakamura Kankuro.
Works with Youkiza (as a marionette designer): 1992 "Pelléas e Mélisande". 94: "Tempest". (As an actor): In 1973, he performed with Magosaburo Youki "Kugutsu-banashi Koi-no Edozome"(Written and directed by Ren Saito).Since 35 years, he is our associate.
